For those of you who are new (or those who have forgotten), our ultimate goal here at Folsom Lake is to give you a new way of thinking about YOUR health. This will encompass basically three different elements.
“I don’t have time to…” This is what we call Lifestyle. Prioritization. Everyone has the same 24 hours in the day. Where you put that time is up to you, and you alone. We’ve all made excuses, we all have things we ‘HAVE’ to do (sleep, eat, bathroom, work), but after that, it’s up to you.
“If I could only eat better…” This is what we call health. It includes inputs (food), outputs (looks, biomarkers, dress size) This is where we are going to spend some time…but first…
“I want to get just ONE pull up!” This is fitness. Anything in the realm of physical goals that we need to do the work to see the results.
So let’s talk about that health thing. The amount of misinformation is absolutely ridiculous. The problem lies in this…we don’t know nearly as much about the body as ‘the exerts’ lead you to believe. Your primary doctor has about 10 hours of nutrition education on the high end. Combine that with…you are an individual. We can shotgun the approach to your health to a certain point, after which, you have to pull up the panties and figure it out. So let’s get to it.
Everyone needs to start with the low hanging fruit. Reading too many books and blogs amounts to very little if you aren’t taking care of the simple stuff. And when I say ‘taking care of’ I mean knowing exactly what the hell you are doing, which I’ll get into. For some folks who know what is coming and…have this to say, “But it’s just too much!” Well then…there’s not a lot we can do for you. If this is ‘too hard’, you simply don’t’ want it bad enough. Come on in, hit your workout, and continue to wonder what life could be like and talk about why others simply have ‘more time’ than you. That same 24 hours in a day everyone else has.
First off, we are a giving type of people. So we want to give you something. That something is MICROnutrients. When (re)starting a healthy eating lifestyle, we need to fill the holes first. Give the cells what they need so they can do what they really want to do. Then we can hit other areas. Each of your meals needs to contain a healthy dose of vegetables. Lots of color, especially green. If you can cook, the vegetarian blogs are a great resource. Before you worry about restricting calories (weight watchers, jenny craig, sugar detox), you need to give your body the foundation for improvement. Give it the nutrients it needs. Hit some cookbooks, online resources, don’t be afraid of a LITTLE real butter. Cook in healthy oils (olive, coconut, avocado), add a little garlic and bacon and almost anything tastes great.
If you can’t cook…Try this…Grab a blender, the one you bring out for alcohol. Throw in one cored apple, handful of blueberries, couple of strawberries, a (peeled) cutie orange, 12 oz of coconut water, and fill the rest of the carafe with some power greens mix. Don’t stuff it, just put it in. Start on low for 10-15 seconds, then crank it up to it’s highest speed for another 30 seconds. Viola. Probably more micro nutrients than most of us have had in a long time. Green smoothie, there are a ton of recipes out there. Low carb, high nutrients, real food, tastes great, tons of fiber. Long hanging fruit, feeding the cells. This is just step one…but it is a start.
